Ideas for Online Game tournament, 1 vs 1 turns

I'm thinking of coding a simple website for tournaments where 1 player takes on another online player and rank up in the tournament until a winner wins the tournament. Multiple player joins to a tournament. Think of those Chess online websites (against PC and against other players). No user accounts just straight up start the tournament when the required number of players to play a tournament is met.

I only need guidance of where to look or what technologies might be useful to code such website.

I'm flexible with these languages: PHP, Javascript (would prefer not to use it, Libre or open-source alt are welcome), Go, C/C++, Java or Python.

Also, I would like to do it server-side BUT my priority is just to get started in any way.
