Messages not in SQS queue when processing lambda is linked

I have a SQS FIFO queue that gets populated from selections made on my webpage. I also have a lambda function that's supposed to process and delete the messages from my queue. I set it up so that my SQS queue is an event trigger for my lambda function. However, when I did this I stopped seeing my queue's message count increase whenever selections are made from my webpage.
